A family printing press in Maharashtra. Since 1983.

Satara is not a printing town. It is a district town in western Maharashtra, ringed by hills, three hours south of Pune on a road that used to take five. In 1983, if you were a Marathi publisher in Satara and you needed a book printed, you sent it to Pune or Mumbai and you waited — and you paid for the waiting.

Shri Narayan Deshpande thought that was a strange way to do business. He had spent years around presses, and he had a conviction that turned out to be the whole company: the work should happen where you can put your hand on it. Not sent away. Not subcontracted. Not explained over a telephone by somebody who had never seen the sheet.

So, in 1983, he started Lokmangal Mudranalay — at first as a partnership firm. The name is deliberate — lok, the people; mangal, auspicious; mudranalay, printing house. A printing house for the good of the people. It was, by the standards of the industry, an unfashionably sincere name, and it never changed.

The first customers were the ones nobody else wanted: small Marathi publishers running editions of a few thousand copies, schools that needed workbooks before the term started, local authors with a manuscript and a fixed budget. Runs too small for the big Pune presses to care about. Runs that, if you got them wrong, ended a publisher's year.

Lokmangal did not get them wrong. That was the entire proposition, and it was enough.

Over four decades the press grew the way family businesses grow — slowly, and by reinvesting everything. Offset came in 1999, on a single-colour machine. Four-colour and computer-to-plate in 2016. A web press in 2021. A full binding line and a carton-making setup in 2023. Each step brought another stage of the work in-house, so a job never had to leave the building.

At no point did the press outsource a stage of the work. Not because outsourcing is immoral, but because Narayan's original conviction had turned out to be commercially correct: every hand a job passes through is a hand that can drop it.

By 2026 the press had printed for Maharashtra for forty-three years — textbooks, children's readers, exam guides, devotional titles, and the local Marathi literature that a district town quietly keeps alive. It had never advertised. It had never needed to.

And then his grandson looked at a map.

What Shardul saw was that the same problem his grandfather had solved for Satara in 1983 — work sent away, margins taken by people who never touched the sheet — was being suffered at continental scale by SME publishers in Nairobi, Lagos, Accra and Cape Town. Same problem. Same solution. A much bigger map.
